Looking After Our Mates

Important information for Sporting Clubs

Duty Of Care

Are you doing everything you can to protect your members? Are you liable if your members have an accident after drinking at the Club? Avoid litigation or even a tragic loss of your team mates.

Australia’s sporting culture is one which has always seen alcohol play a key role in the social aspect of club life. However this social aspect of club sport can also foster risky drinking behaviour among younger members and develop an unhealthy club culture that is to the detriment of your members.

Clubs can play a role in helping to educate their members about the risks associated with excessive drinking and promote a responsible attitude towards alcohol use.

The Looking After Our Mates resource has been developed by Vic Roads, RoadSafe Victoria, Victoria Police, Traffic Accident Commission (TAC) and the Australian Drug Foundation. It is a drink and drug driving information session with a simple, effective message about responsible drinking, safe driving and looking after your friends.

This will put you in a position of strength when an accident occurs and will also assist with obtaining grants.

The interactive presentation is delivered free to schools, sports and community groups, and runs for approximately 30 minutes.

Clubs in the past have expressed concerns over bar sales if they promoted this program. Evidence has proven that the opposite is true. People are more willing to stay in a safe,   family friendly environment and sales have increased after showing this presentation. Give it a go and show your members that the Club cares for them, their families and friends.
